Sentinel Healthcare Advocates was born out of the frustration that Doug and Anne felt every day in their role as registered nurses working on the frantically busy trauma service of a major teaching hospital. Meticulous in their approach to patient care, they couldn't help but see how patients' needs could, and often did, fall through the cracks - orders written but not implemented; tests cancelled because a patient wasn't properly prepped, leading to both a delay in treatment and an inevitable lengthening of the hospital stay; critical lab results not passed on to physicians or acted upon in a timely fashion; home medications not documented and therefore not ordered; multiple moves within the hospital from one floor to another, causing a disruption in continuity of care - the list, tragically, goes on and on. Doctors and nurses weren't to blame; these problems were the natural consequence of broken systems and failed processes within healthcare.
"Our mother recently had surgery and developed a post-operative bowel-blockage. A tube was placed in her stomach to relieve her nausea while this resolved. Then she was switched to another service (within the same hospital). The new team thought the tube was there for nutrition and ordered tube feedings! Thank goodness our patient advocate was there to catch the mistake! Instead of a bag of formula, Mom had a nice hot meal that evening. Thanks Annie at Sentinel!"
Doug and Anne arrived at a conclusion that would come to embody their vision for this company: Everyone deserves to have someone at their side to watch over them - a sentinel - to fiercely guard and protect their best interests as they relate to health and well-being.
"During a recent hospital admission, the medications that I am on every day were not ordered. Once my Sentinel advocate provided my physician with an accurate record of my meds, they were resumed immediately."
In their role as patient advocates, Doug and Anne will draw on the expertise gained through years of nursing experience, the majority of which has been spent providing direct care at the bedside of severely ill and hospitalized patients. Their sole focus will be on the needs of their client, the patient – NOT the hospital – NOT the insurance company! Moving forward, it is their determined intention never to lose sight of what started them on this journey.
